Why some Chinese hotels turn foreign guests away

The most common accommodation surprise in China is arriving at a booked hotel and being told it cannot accept foreign guests. This is not discrimination and it is not personal: it reflects whether that property is set up to complete the registration process for foreign passports. Requirements vary by city and property and change; confirm current rules with the property before you rely on a booking.

Editorial planning notice: information, prices, eligibility, availability, laws, network access, safety conditions and provider terms can change. Independently verify current official and provider information before traveling, booking, buying or relying on any option.

What is actually happening

Accommodation in China is generally required to register guests with local authorities. Registering a foreign passport uses a different process from registering a domestic ID, and not every small property has the system access or trained staff to complete it.

A property that lacks that capability will decline the booking at check-in even if an international booking site accepted your reservation. The booking site does not always know.

How to filter before you book

Larger international chains and mid-range or above domestic chains in major cities are the safest choices. Very small guesthouses, budget properties in smaller cities, and some apartment-style listings are the highest risk.

The most reliable check is direct: message the property before booking and ask plainly whether it can accept foreign passport guests. A clear yes from the property itself is worth more than a filter on a booking site.

Registration and what it means for you

Where you stay in registered accommodation, the property normally handles registration at check-in using your passport. Where you stay privately, for example with friends or family, the responsibility for registering may fall to you within a limited window.

Rules, timeframes and procedures vary by location and change. Confirm current requirements with the relevant local authority or your accommodation rather than relying on general guidance.

Booking channels

International booking sites are convenient and familiar but list a narrower slice of Chinese inventory. Domestic platforms list far more properties, often at lower prices, and generally show the foreign-guest status more accurately.

Cancellation terms, payment methods and deposit practices vary by platform and property; read the current terms at booking.

Deposits at check-in

Many properties take a refundable incidentals deposit at check-in, sometimes in cash, and refund it at checkout after a room check. This is routine. Keep any receipt until the refund is returned, and allow a few extra minutes at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a booking site tell me if a hotel accepts foreigners?

Sometimes, but the information is not always accurate or current. Confirming directly with the property before travel is more reliable.

What do I do if I am turned away at check-in?

Ask the property to help identify a nearby property that can register foreign guests, and contact your booking platform about the reservation. Refund outcomes depend on the platform's current terms.

Do I need to carry my passport at check-in?

Accommodation registration is normally based on the passport, so you should expect to present the physical passport rather than a copy. Requirements vary; confirm with the property.
