Chengdu Travel Guide 2026: Essential Tips for Foreigners

2026-02-11 · China Travel · Reading time: 5 min

Chengdu is the only megacity in the world where the official lifestyle is "slow." The teahouses are full at 2pm on a Tuesday. The mahjong games never stop. The pandas — 200+ at the Chengdu Research Base — are the world's cutest animals doing the world's least amount of work, which is deeply relatable to the locals. But beneath the chill exterior, Chengdu is China's most dynamic food city: mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐), kung pao chicken (宫保鸡丁), and twice-cooked pork (回锅肉) were all invented here. The hotpot is

🏛 Must-See Attractions

1. Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding 成都大熊猫繁育研究基地 ⭐

💡 Critical tip: Arrive at 8:00 AM — pandas eat breakfast 8-10 AM, then sleep. After 11 AM, you'll mostly see sleeping lumps of fur. How to visit:
  • Go STRAIGHT to the adult panda enclosures (don't stop at the entrance area)
  • Then visit the panda kindergarten (baby pandas!)
  • Then the red panda area
  • Finally the museum and gift shop
  • ⚠️ No flash photography! It scares the pandas. Alternative: Dujiangyan Panda Base (都江堰熊猫谷) — fewer crowds, more natural setting, 90min from Chengdu

    2. Wuhou Shrine 武侯祠

    3. Jinli Ancient Street 锦里

Must-eat: Rabbit head (兔头 tùtóu), sugar painting (糖画), three cannons (三大炮) ⚠️ Very touristy — good for photos and atmosphere, overpriced food

    4. Kuanzhai Alley 宽窄巷子

Three alleys: Wide Alley (宽巷子 — leisure), Narrow Alley (窄巷子 — culture), Well Alley (井巷子 — modern) ⚠️ Also touristy — but the restored Qing dynasty architecture is beautiful

    5. People's Park 人民公园 ⭐ THE REAL CHENGDU

    Must-do:

    6. Wenshu Monastery 文殊院

Must-do: Vegetarian restaurant inside the temple (¥20-40) — surprisingly delicious

    🍜 Must-Eat Local Food

Sichuan Cuisine = The Best Food in China (fight me) 🌶️

    1. Sichuan Hotpot 四川火锅 ⭐

    Beginner's guide:
  • Order 鸳鸯锅 (yuānyāngguō — half spicy, half mild)
  • Dipping sauce: sesame oil + garlic + cilantro + oyster sauce
  • Cook times: tripe 10sec, beef 15sec, vegetables 1-2min
  • Don't drink the broth!
  • 2. Mapo Tofu 麻婆豆腐

    3. Kung Pao Chicken 宫保鸡丁

Available everywhere — but best at Sichuan restaurants, not tourist places

    4. Twice-Cooked Pork 回锅肉

The dish that defines Sichuan home cooking. Every restaurant has it.

    5. Street Food & Snacks

    6. Where Locals Eat ✅

    7. Where NOT to Eat 🚫
