Everything to do before your China trip: visa, packing, apps to download, insurance, and the complete pre-departure checklist.
"Do I need a visa?"
Maybe not! China has dramatically expanded visa-free entry. Check below ?you might not need one at all.Visa Types for Tourists
30-Day Visa-Free Entry (The Easiest Option!) 🆕 NEW
Citizens of 52 countries can visit China visa-free for up to 30 days. This is the simplest way to visit China. Eligible countries (52, valid until December 31, 2026): Europe (35): France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Sweden, UK Americas (6): Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Mexico Asia-Pacific (7): Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Brunei Middle East (4): UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain (note: Qatar has bilateral agreement) Conditions:- Ordinary passport only (not diplomatic/service passports)
- Stay ?30 days per entry
- Purpose: tourism, business, visiting family/friends, cultural exchange, transit
- ?NOT for: work, study, journalism
- Multiple entries allowed ?you can leave and re-enter
- Passport must be valid 6+ months with blank pages ⚠️ Russia has a different expiry: Valid until September 14, 2026 (not December 31) ⚠️ Brunei has no expiry date on its arrangement 💡 80% of potential visitors from eligible countries don't know this policy exists! Spread the word.
- Valid passport (6+ months remaining)
- Onward ticket to a third country (not your origin country) with confirmed seat
- Hotel booking confirmation
- Fill out the transit visa form at the airport (free!) ⚠️ Important transit gotchas:
- Your onward destination must be a third country or region different from your origin (e.g., USA → China → Japan ✓, or UK → China → Hong Kong ✓). However, your origin and final destination CAN be the same country if the transit route passes through a third territory (e.g., USA → China → USA is OK if you have a confirmed onward ticket via a third country/region like Japan or Hong Kong). When in doubt, check with your airline — they make the final boarding decision.
- Separate tickets with checked luggage can cause problems — airlines may refuse boarding
- Tibet, Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, and Jilin are OUTSIDE the transit zone
- You must stay within the allowed province cluster 💡 2026 Update: Beijing recorded over 7 million border crossings in the first 4 months of 2026, up 13% year-on-year, partly thanks to visa-free policies. China now has unilateral visa-free for 50 countries and 240-hour transit visa-free for 55 countries. Example: Fly New York ?Shanghai ?Tokyo = 10 days in Shanghai + Jiangsu + Zhejiang, no visa needed!
- Check your local Chinese embassy website ?requirements vary by country
- Prepare documents:
- Submit in person or via visa agency (some countries now use visa centers)
- Processing time: 4-5 business days (expedited: 2-3 days, extra fee)
- Cost: ~$140-170 USD depending on nationality and number of entries
- Your hotel bookings must cover EVERY night ?immigration may check
- Tibet requires an additional permit ?you must go through a licensed tour agency
- Xinjiang has extra security checks ?expect checkpoints, carry passport always
- Hong Kong and Macau are separate ?entering HK/Macau exits China; your single-entry visa is used up!
- Visa start date matters ?you can only enter on or after the issue date
